Jan-Christoph Tonigs was born in Münster, Germany, and studied theater, film, and television science at the Ruhruniversität Bochum, as well as production, screenplay writing, and animation at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.

He has worked on several film and theater projects over the years, including the production of and participation in theater plays, and screenwriting and management of theater and film festivals. From 2007–13 he was head of the Kulturbüro Münsterland/Koordinationsbüro für die regionale Kulturpolitik des Landes NRW.

Tonigs was the initiator and organizer of the German-Dutch art project GrensWerte from 2009–13. He has been the Artistic Director of Kloster Bentlage since August 2013.
