Ton Martens (born 1946 in Velsen, the Netherlands) trained as a graphic designer at the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost in Breda from 1965–69. He worked in London at Negus & Negus, in the Hague at Tel Design, and as a freelancer until 1980 mostly for the Hague Gemeentemuseum. He then studied printmaking at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam from 1980–83. Since then he has worked as a visual artist. From 1985 to 2005 he taught at the AKI Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede. Martens makes regular use of the frottage technique for his projects, often combined with photography. He has also made several artist’s books. Since the end of 2013 he has been working with a Risograph press. In 2014 he won the Dr. Ilse Boon Printmaking Prize.
